Workshop on "Reverse Mathematics: Foundations and Applications" 3. Petition on the treatment of Alan Turing =========================================================================== 1. (from Ning Zhong) Professor Marian Pour-El: A sad news to report: Professor Marian Pour-El passed away on June 10, 2009. Professor Pour-El was one of the founders of computable analysis, and she definitely left a unique and admirable legacy with her many contributions to the field. A memoriam of her can be found at http://blog.lib.umn.edu/itcomm/news/2009/06/in_memoriam_marian_pour-el.html =========================================================================== 2. (from Denis Hirschfeldt) Workshop on "Reverse Mathematics: Foundations and Applications": A workshop entitled "Reverse Mathematics: Foundations and Applications" will be held at the University of Chicago on November 6-8, 2009, with support from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. While the workshop will be centered on the program of reverse mathematics, we intend its scope to be broad, including connections with the foundations of mathematics, computability theory, proof theory, constructive mathematics, theoretical computer science, and cognitive science, and we encourage those interested in these areas to participate. We expect to have a significant amount of funding for participants. If you are interested in attending, or have any questions, please contact one of the organizers: Denis Hirschfeldt: drh@math.uchicago.edu Damir Dzhafarov: damir@math.uchicago.edu We would appreciate hearing from those interested in funding by September 21st. More information, including hotel information, will be available within a few days at www.math.uchicago.edu/~drh/workshop.html =========================================================================== 3. (from Jeff Paris, Anad Pillay, Huma Shah, and others) Petition on the treatment of Alan Turing: There is a petition relating to the treatment of Alan Turing to be found on the official site of the British Prime Minister at: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/turing The petition has already, in just a couple of weeks, been signed by over 19,000 people. It reads: "We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to apologize for the prosecution of Alan Turing that led to his untimely death." Unfortunately one needs to be resident in the UK to validly sign. =========================================================================== Items for the next CiE Newsletter should be sent to s.b.cooper@leeds.ac.uk to arrive by September 13, 2009 ___________________________________________________________________________ ASSOCIATION COMPUTABILITY IN EUROPE http://www.computability.org.uk CiE Conference Series http://www.illc.uva.nl/CiE CiE 2009 http://www.math.uni-heidelberg.de/logic/cie2009 CiE Membership Application Form http://www.cs.swan.ac.uk/acie ___________________________________________________________________________
