Leeds maths graduate reaches final of "Best UK Maths Student" | |
|
Mr Christian Groh and Professor Mark Kelmanson of the School of Mathematics were invited to the 2006 Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) "Student of the Year" Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony in London. The prestigious awards, organised by the World Leadership Forum, are presented annually to the brightest undergraduates in fifteen disciplines that reflect the wide range of degrees offered in British and Irish universities. Christian, top-ranked 2006 Leeds Maths graduate and winner of two prizes and a three-year University research scholarship, made the shortlist of three finalists in the "Best Mathematics Student" category on the strength of his final-year project in applied mathematics, Sharp error estimates for the numerical solution of Fredholm integral equations of the second kind, conceived and supervised by Professor Kelmanson. The panel of judges from the LMS and IMA divulged that Christian's project was "outstanding" and that the final decision had been very close and difficult to reach. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Arthur, has personally congratulated Christian on being a "credit to the School of Mathematics and to the University of Leeds". Christian has now embarked on (and successfully completed in November 2010) a PhD in applied mathematics with Professor Kelmanson.
(Following on from this project, a theoretical and numerical extension and
formalisation of its main aims
resulted in a joint
research paper
in the prestigious
Journal of
Integral Equations and Applications.)
