About me

In 1990 I obtained my BSc in Mathematics from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. After that I was a student at Warwick University where I got my MSc and PhD (1991 and 1994 respectively) under the supervision of Prof. David Mond. The majority of my PhD was published in Topology, see my research page. My research is in Singularity Theory, in particular the topology of complex analytic spaces and maps. From October 1994 I was a research associate to Prof. J.W. Bruce in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Liverpool University. I became a Lecturer in Mathematics at Middlesex University in September 1996 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in September 1998.

In March 2000 I escaped to the North again and joined the University of Leeds as a Lecturer in Pure Mathematics in the School of Mathematics. In October 2001 I became the Deputy Admissions Tutor, and then the full tutor in 2003. (If you want to do a degree with us, then see Maths degrees at Leeds.) When I began our entry requirements were BBB, now they are AAA. Job done! (As I believe they say.) I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in March 2005, but it didn't take effect until August 2005. Partly as a reward for my outstandingly fantastically brilliant work as admissions tutor I was released into the community for the academic year 2005/6 so I spent 5 months in Boston, USA and one in Sao Carlos, Brazil.

My book How to Think Like A Mathematician has just been published and I am preparing videos to accompany it. The first of which you can see on my YouTube channel. I'm also doing the usual academic tasks of writing papers, reviews, grant applications, etc.

Is this me?

Am I really a character in a Brazilian soap opera? My wife has a friend whose father, Marcílio Moraes, writes soap operas for Brazilian TV (Isn't that the the coolest job in the world?) The main character, Miguel Campobello, of his Vidas Opostas, is mathematician, who gained his PhD in Britain and who is a lecturer. Sounds suspiciously like me! Was I the inspiration? The synopsis of the novela was on the show's web site (it finished in August 2007 - most Brazilian soap run for 18 months rather than years like they do in the UK). The first line was:
Vidas Opostas vai contar a história de Miguel, um jovem milionário, considerado gênio da matemática, que passou os últimos cinco anos fazendo doutorado na Inglaterra.
Translated this is:
Vidas Opostas is the story of Miguel, a young millionaire, considered a genius in mathematics who has spent the last five years doing a PhD in England.
Oh wait, I'm not a millionaire and I'm not considered a genius. Damn, I guess it's not me after all...
