Student Attendance

This page explains the policy on attendance and the consequences for non-attendance applicable to all students parented by the School of Mathematics for the academic year 2011/12.

According to the Student Contract and the Partnership agreement, students are expected to attend all teaching activities, including lectures, practicals, tutorials, examples classes, workshops, and personal tutorials. Repeated unauthorised absences from teaching activities will lead to formal warnings being issued to students, and ultimately students can be excluded from the University as part of the University’s ‘Unsatisfactory Student Procedure’.

In the School of Mathematics, for most modules students will report their attendance by signing an attendance sheet circulated during some of the lectures. Students are responsible to make sure that they sign the sheet.
If a student is ill or cannot attend a teaching session, he or she is required to submit a request via the Portal to be excused. For details click here.

Acceptable reasons for absences to be authorised include health problems, bereavement and serious personal difficulties. Traffic delays, attending family celebrations, paid employment or extra-curricular sports activities  are normally regarded as unauthorised absences.
Students who are ill for more than 5 working days, will be required to submit a medical note to the Undergraduate Office.

In case of repeated absences, the following Escalation Process will be applied to all students parented by the School of Mathematics over the course of a full academic year.
  1. If a student has on his/her record four unexcused absences, the students will be sent an email with a first informal warning by the Maths Taught Student Office. The student will be asked for the reason for the absences, and if an appropriate reason is provided, the unexcused absences will be removed from the student’s record.
  2. If a student has on his/her record eight unexcused absences, the students will be sent an email with a second informal warning by the Maths Taught Student Office. The student will be asked to make an appointment with his or her personal tutor or the Director of Learning and Teaching, and the student will be informed about the implications of further absences. The student will be asked for the reason for the absences, and if an appropriate reason is provided, the unexcused absences will be removed from the student’s record.
  3. If a student has on his/her record twelve unexcused absences, a First Formal Written Warning by the Head of the School will be sent to the student. This Formal Written Warning will be copied to the Office of Academic Appeals and Regulations for the student's file, according to the University’s Unsatisfactory Students Procedure. If there is no improvement in the student's attendance and the student has not made a serious attempt to recover, the School will issue a Second Formal Written Warning. This will be copied to the Office of Academic Appeals and Regulations. Where the School asks that the student be excluded from the University he/she will be notified by the Office and invited to submit a plea against this recommendation. The student will then be interviewed by the Head of Academic Appeals and Regulation and will bring the plea to the interview.
