The Royal Statistical Society (RSS)The RSS provides a natural "home" for everyone interested in statistics. It is both a learned society and a professional body. It was founded in 1834 and received its Royal Charter in 1887. It has about 7000 members; approximately one quarter of these live and work outside the UK. The RSS also has many regional groups including the Leeds/Bradford Local Group. RSS AccreditationAs with many professions, statisticians can obtain chartered status
through the "Chartered
Statistician" qualification. Since its establishment in 1993, the
CStat has an increasingly important role, which is likely to
further increase in future years. Recent graduates are eligible for
the Graduate Statistician (GradStat) status. After five years
experience this can then be converted into the professional status of
Chartered Statistician (CStat).
The following University of Leeds degree programmes have recently been
accredited by
the Royal Statistical Society:
subject to at least 60 credits of statistics modules at Level 3 or above. All final year University of Leeds students on one of the above programmes of study can become a student member of the RSS free of charge. A completed application form must be signed by a member of staff from the Department of Statistics before sending to the RSS. Graduates achieving at least a Lower Second Class Honours will be granted the Society's professional status of Graduate Statistician (GradStat) on application (and payment of a fee). The Royal Statistical Society PrizeEach year the student with the best statistics performance (taking at least 60 Level 3 or above credits in statistics and gaining a First Class Honours overall) will be awarded a Royal Statistical Society Prize. Additionally, the MSc student with the best statistics performance (gaining a Distinction overall) wil also be awarded a Royal Statistical Society Prize. Statistical CareersPlease note that statistical jobs are regularly advertised on the web. Have a look at the RSS careers page and job advertisements link page. Another place to look for statistical vacancies is on the allstat mailing list. |
