Composer in Residence
The School of Mathematics is hosting the residency of the composer
Eleri Pound for ten months from February 2011, funded by the
Leverhulme Trust
Artist-in-Residence scheme.
Eleri plans to compose four pieces of music during the residency, each
reflecting a different mathematical idea, as well as creating wall displays,
a website, and having input into the joint honours mathematics and music
programme.
Eleri Pound was a joint honours undergraduate at Leeds in Maths & Music.
After graduating she stayed at Leeds and completed her practice-based
research PhD in composition in 2008. Eleri is interested in exploring ways
of using mathematical concepts to create pre-compositional material and
compositional structures. She has an interest in alternative tuning
systems and the notational and practical problems associated with the use
of these. Eleri is also a harpist, involved in performance of new music
and is interested in the historical development of the harp, including the
exploration of contemporary music written for the harp.
