I will try to describe a rather important chapter in differential algebra; namely its impact on and connection with problems around the number and structure of "rational points" of varieties over function fields. This work dates from at least 15 years ago and key figures are Buium and Hrushovski.
But I hope to touch also on related current work by D. Bertrand and myself around Schanuel's conjecture over function fields.
