The Department expects to have several tenure eligible or tenured positions available, to begin in September 1998. Several are part of an interdisciplinary/applied initiative, including numerical analysis and actuarial science. Besides this initiative, the Department is searching broadly for individuals who would significantly broaden and strengthen areas currently represented and who cut across areas. Some preference will be given to candidates in algebraic number theory and topology. Exceptional research and teaching experience required. Rank and salary negotiable. Applications are invited from men and women with good teaching skills and active research interests for the position of Lecturer in Applied Mathematics. The appointment is a Lecturer B (roughly equivalent to a UK Lectureship or US Assistant/Associate Professorship) for a fixed term of 3 years. Further continuation is dependent upon satisfactory performance and availability of funding. Applicants should have a PhD degree in Applied Mathematics or equivalent. The preferred starting date is January 1998. The University of Western Australia is consistently rated as one of the highest quality universities in Australia, both in teaching and research. The student intake has possibly the highest average entrance standards of any Australian university. The Department of Mathematics is a large combined department incorporating Pure and Applied Mathematics and Statistics, all three sections having an excellent reputation. The mains strengths of the Applied Mathematics group are in Dynamical Systems, Control, Optimisation, Continuum Mechanics and Industrial modelling.
