UK Nonlinear News Issue 61, Dec 2010

Articles and Reviews

  • In recognition of Jaroslav's influential science and his positive influence on the journal over many years, we would like to invite interested researchers to submit papers for a special memorial issue of Dynamical Systems: an International Journal, with issue editors David Broomhead, Robin Callard and Paul Glendinning. The remit and submission procedures will be the same as for usual issues of Dynamical Systems; see the journal website below and the manuscript submission page. On submission, you should mark your paper as being for this special issue. We will particularly welcome submissions that connect with Jaroslav's work and interests in some way; for example:
    • Low-dimensional dynamics, chaos and applications
    • Time-series analysis of signals from nonlinear systems
    • Skew product systems and strange non-chaotic attractors
    • Spatially extended systems
    • Applications in biology and medicine
The deadline for first submission of papers to the journal is end of February 2011, with an expected publication date of December 2011. If you have any pre-submission queries about the issue, please contact one of the issue editors, Paul Glendinning ( or one of the co-editors in chief, Peter Ashwin ( and Matthew Nicol (
  • Peter Ashwin and Alastair Rucklidge are planning a series of Dynamical Systems seminars by Access Grid (video-conferencing) technology. The first seminar will be given by Prof Paul Glendinning (Manchester) on a date to be arranged. Please see the website for futher details, and information on how to participate, or contact one of the organisers.
  • The School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Kent now offers an MSc in "Mathematics and its Applications".

Recent Theses

  • Neil Bristow passed his PhD viva in November 2010 with the thesis "Mode Interactions and Transitions Associated to Period-Doublings in Maps with Two Parameters". The work was supervised by Philip Aston.

Journal News

  • Jerry Marsden was active with the Journal of Nonlinear Science from its launch in the early 1990s. His dedication and hard work will be heavily missed by Springer and all his colleagues. A special issue is planned in his honor in the journal and will be edited by Tony Bloch and Tudor Ratiu.
  • Special issue of Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical 'Current trends in integrability and nonlinear phenomena'
  • Supplement issue of the Journal of Nonlinear Mathematical Physics to Vol. 17, November 2010: Special Issue in Memory of F. A. Berezin, Edited by Dimitry Leites

Issue Sixty two: March 2011

Issue Sixty two is scheduled for March 2011. Submission of news (new courses, meetings, conferences, new appointments, jobs, new research directions etc.), comments or articles about any aspect of nonlinearity in the UK are very welcome and should arrive by 10 March 2010.
