UK Nonlinear News ReviewPattern Formation, Nonlinear Dynamics and Applications (PANDA)Alastair RucklidgeA one-day meeting on pattern formation, nonlinear dynamics and applications was held on Monday 13th November 2006 in the Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Leeds. The theme of the meeting was `Pattern Formation in Experiments'.The PANDA meetings aim to combine pedagogical talks with research-level presentations. At this meeting, Alastair Rucklidge spoke on `An introduction to pattern selection in experiments', followed by two research talks: Anne Juel on `The influence of viscosity on the frozen wave instability' and Rebecca Hoyle on `Pattern formation during the oxidation of CO on Pt{100}: a mesoscopic model'. Finally, Fritz Busse discussed `Understanding turbulence through sequences of bifurcations', jointly with the Applied Mathematics seminar. A total of 24 people participated in the meeting, of whom 5 were women, 7 were PhD students and 5 were postdocs. The LMS-funded PANDA network links Surrey, Cambridge, Leeds and Nottingham. This was the first meeting of the newly restarted network: the next one will be held in Guildford in March 2007, on the subject of `Localised Patterns'. |
