.......................................................... Robin Simons (Surrey) passed his PhD viva on 19th January 2006. His thesis is titled `Applications of functional differential equations in pest control and sand ripple modelling' and constitutes a wide ranging study of applications of certain kinds of functional partial differential equations including differential equations with impulses. The thesis is in two parts. The first is on the control of insect pests and the second is on the dynamics of aeolian sand ripples. The work was supervised jointly by Stephen Gourley and Rebecca Hoyle, and examined by Bjorn Sandstede (Surrey) and John Billingham (Nottingham). ..........................................................
