A major goal of the Workshop will be to achieve a general and unifying perspective of the control of nonlinear dynamical behaviour. This perspective will aid researchers currently working in the area as well as those interested in the field whose experience may be in one of the application areas or in control theory. A classification of work in this field into broad categories and determination of connections among these categories will be sought. This classification will address fully the control of chaos, an area that has received great attention of late. Relationships between control of chaos, control of bifurcations, and traditional robust and nonlinear control theory will be investigated.
There is much to be gained from an integrated comparative examination of nonlinear dynamic control problems as they arise in these various applications. Application areas to be addressed in the Workshop include: lasers, electric power systems, jet engines, chemical processes, mechanical systems, secure communications, medicine, satellite dynamics, flight dynamics, thermal convection and fluidized beds. During the Workshop, lectures will be presented in the mornings and shorter presentations and informal discussions will be held in the afternoons. Participants are encouraged to send their abstracts for selection.
The Workshop is open to scholars from all countries which are members of the United Nations, IAEA or UNESCO. Participation is limited, and selection will be restricted to those with relevant research experience. As a rule, travel and subsistence expenses of the participants are borne by the home institution. However, some funds are available for a limited number of people from developing countries. Some funds from the European Commission are also available for young researchers, who are residents or nationals of countries of the European Economic Area. As scarcity of funds allows travel to be granted only in a few exceptional cases, every effort should be made by candidates to secure support for their fares from their home country. English will be the official language of the Workshop. There is no registration fee.
Sponsors: European Commission (EC), ICTP, SISSA.

EUROPEAN COMMISSION (CEC)
Human Capital and Mobility (HCM) Grant
The International Centre for Theoretical Physics gratefully
acknowledges support from the CEC, to help young scientists from the
European Economic Area to participate in the Workshop on Nonlinear Control
and Control of Chaos. Upon receipt of the appropriate application form,
the ICTP will submit your name for some financial assistance. The outcome
of selection for grants will be known only close to the time of the event
and, should you be one of those selected for support, we shall let you know
immediately. The decision of the selection committee will be communicated
to all candidates. Please read the following carefully.
Who is eligible for support?
* citizens of one of the following countries:
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece,
Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal,
Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom;
* or persons resident and working in research in one of the
above countries for at least one year.
If you comply with the above requisites, you may be eligible for a
grant under the CEC, Human Capital and Mobility Programme.
Please complete the relevant application form, to be found on the
following pages, and return it together with our Registration and
Accommodation Form to the address indicated.
Do not send the request to the CEC!
