Numerical Methods for Nonlinear Dynamics and Bifurcations

University of Bristol 1-3 July 2002

By Bernd Krauskopf and Hinke Osinga

This workshop took place 1-3 July 2002 at the Department of Mathematics, University of Bristol. It was organised by Alan Champneys, Bernd Krauskopf and Hinke Osinga from Engineering Mathematics, and Steve Wiggins from Mathematics. The meeting continued a series of informal and lively meetings organised by Willy Govaerts and Yuri Kuznetsov in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Gent.

There were 53 participants from 8 different countries. The programme was deliberately kept light so that ample time for discussions was available (see the workshop homepage for more details and the group photo). A particular highlight of the workshop were the computer demonstration sessions on Monday and Tuesday afternoon. In a completely informal way, software was presented, explained, and tested while participants could wander around and learn about the latest developments. This produced so much interest that discussions continued long after these sessions were "officially closed."

All in all, the workshop was a great success thanks to the enthusiastic contributions of all participants. We thank the EPSRC and the LMS for their financial support. This successful series of workshops is currently planned to continue next year in Belgium, and in Spain the year after. Information about next year's meeting will be announced in due course.
