The Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory is hosting a five day conference on quantifying uncertainty in predicting complex systems. The quantification is necessary to evaluate our ability to make good decisions based on simulations by identifying dominant contributions to uncertainty arising from measurement variability, limited observations of physical quantities, unknown science, modeling approximations, numerical approximation, programming inaccuracies, variation among interpretation of results, inherent variability or instability of the phenomenon, and anything else that might contribute to our expectations being different from reality.
This Conference will provide an opportunity for workers with diverse viewpoints, modeling methods, and experimental techniques to compare approaches to the prediction of complex phenomena.

Background: This conference ties in with the celebrations in Manchester to mark the 50th Anniversary of the birth of ``the Baby'', the first stored-program electronic digital computer, which was born at the University of Manchester on June 21st, 1948.

The meeting runs from 9am on Tuesday 16th June until 2pm on Wednesday 17th June. The aim is to describe how numerical analysis has been influenced by the development of computers over the last fifty years. The meeting comprises invited talks covering key areas including numerical linear algebra, optimisation, ODEs, PDEs and computational fluid dynamics, and will contain historical remarks, perspectives and anecdotes. The influence of high-performance computing on the future of numerical analysis will also be assessed. A dinner will be held on the Tuesday evening.

In recent years, new ideas related to multiscale methods and wavelet bases have appeared in many area of applied mathematics and engineering sciences, such as
- Signal and image processing.
- Numerical analysis and scientific computing.
- Turbulence analysis and multifractal analysis.
- Statistical estimation and modeling.
These ideas are practically implementable by fast and simple algorithms. The understanding of their effectiveness, relies on a strong input of theoretical harmonic analysis and approximation theory.

This summer school is intended to provide in two weeks with:
- A basic theoretical understanding of the main mathematical tools and concepts underlying wavelet-based methods. This will be provided by a basic course of 10 hours, during the two weeks.
- An more detailed insight on the specific applications and of the potential of wavelet methods in comparison with other methods. A series of thematic short courses (2 to 5 hours) will be devoted to this task.
- Practical experience of the implementation of these methods, in the context of the above applications, by programming exercise sessions.
The two weeks will have distinct orientations: analysis problems using multiscale decomposition of the data in the first week, and numerical simulation problems using the multiscale representation of the unknowns in the second week.

The school is especially addressed to PhD students and researchers in applied mathematics, as well as researchers from industry dealing with numerical problems. During these two weeks, they are expected to interact with leading experts in the field.

Lectures will take place at laboratoire ASCI on the campus of University Paris XI, Orsay, 30mn from Paris by train. Accommodation at reasonable price is possible on the campus.

Mathematical Models in Population Biology and Epidemiology: From Elementary to the Frontier, 6-17 July 1998.: University of Wyoming, Laramie, Wyoming.; Program: The application of mathematics to biology is a rapidly expanding area, and we will present an introduction to this topic. This will include both the formulation of models in population biology and epidemiology and the mathematical analysis of these models. Examples at both the elementary and advanced levels will be presented. Mathematical topics will include qualitative analysis of autonomous differential equations and systems, difference and delay equations. Applications will include continuous and discrete populations for single and interacting species, general compartmental models in epidemiology, interaction of demographic and epidemiological effects, and behavioral effects in sexually transmitted diseases. Simulations making use of Mathematica and Maple will be included for illustration of qualitative behavior.

International Workshop on Advanced Black-Box Techniques for Nonlinear Modeling: Theory and Applications with Time-Series Prediction Competition, 8-10 July 1998.

Organisation: Organised at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT/SISTA) and the Interdisciplinary Center for Neural Networks (ICNN) in the framework of the project KIT and the Belgian Interuniversity Attraction Pole IUAP P4/02. In cooperation with the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society.

General Scope: The rapid growth of the fields of neural networks, fuzzy systems and wavelets has offered a variety of new techniques for the modeling of nonlinear systems. These topics have been investigated from differents points of view including statistics, identification and control theory, approximation theory, signal processing, nonlinear dynamics, information theory, physics and optimisation theory amongst others. The aim of this workshop is to serve as an interdisciplinary forum for bringing together specialists in these research disciplines. Issues related to the fundamental theory as well as real-life applications will be addressed.

Time-Series Prediction Competition: Within the framework of this workshop a time-series prediction competition will be held. The results of the competition will be announced during the workshop, where the winner will be awarded. Participants in the competition are asked to submit their predicted data together with a short description and references of the methods used. In order to stimulate wide participation in the competition, attendance of the workshop is not mandatory but is of course encouraged.

Mathematical Modeling in Industry, 22-31 July 1998.: Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, University of Minnesota.; Background: This is a workshop for graduate students and qualified advanced undergraduates. The workshop is meant to provide students with firsthand experienced in industrial research.
Students will work in teams of up to six students under the guidance of a tutor from industry. Each team will be assigned a project on the first day. The tutor will help guide the students in the modeling process, analysis, and computations through discussion sessions. Each team is expected to make a public oral presentation and submit a written report at the end of the 10-day period.
Some of the projects are polishing of semiconductor wafers, energy trading, computer security, crystalisation process, and GPS systems. Companies represented include IBM, Motorola, 3M, Lockheard Martin, and Secure Computing.

Nonlinear Dynamics and Statistics, September 21-25, 1998 .: Isaac Newton Institute, Cambridge.; As part of the Isaac Newton Institute programme on Nonlinear and Nonstationary Signal Processing, there will be a one week workshop on Nonlinear Dynamics and Statistics. The workshop will bring together statisticians, signal processing engineers, and workers in the application of nonlinear dynamical systems to time series analysis.
There has been a good deal of work in the nonlinear dynamics community on novel approaches to understanding time series. This has sometimes been controversial, but it is clear that new and potentially important results have been produced; at the same time, some of the work there has been done in ignorance of standard signal processing and statistical approaches. On the other hand, many people in the more traditional time series analysis areas are not well-informed about this area, or have misconceptions about it. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together workers with different approaches to nonlinear time series analysis and, it is hoped, to begin a synthesis which will eventually lead to better theory and practice in all the related areas.
There will be a relatively small number of formal talks, since the intention is to encourage discussion. However, there will be one day of traditional conference-style short talks, and poster presentations are encouraged.
Applications are invited from researchers in any area who are engaged in understanding of nonlinear time series. Younger researchers are particularly encouraged to apply. Very limited funds may be available to assist younger researchers with accommodation.
The size of the workshop is limited by available space to at most 50 participants.

Tempos in Science and Nature: Structures, Relations and Complexity, 23-26 September 1998.

Siena, Italy.

Information: This workshop will consist of invited lectures and open discussion divided into the following sections:

Complexity: an opportunity for re-unification of the scientific culture and the humanities;
Complex molecular behaviour and structure;
Ecological and environmental modelling.

Objective: The complexity of nature has made it necessary to develop concepts and theories that have little in common with the reductionist and mechanical approach that has dominated scientific thought for two centuries. Science has not so far been able to unravel the molecular and macroscopic complexity of natural phenomena, with their nonlinear and irreversible patterns. The objective of this workshop is to promote a "cross fertilisation" between the humanities and the sciences, to interlace the world of the arts with the world of natural laws and theories. Although the process is still in the early stages and the outcome is uncertain, the scientific community is aware of the need to open new paths of exchange between the sciences and the arts.

Third School on Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Applications to Differential Equations, 12-30 October 1998.: Trieste, Italy; Aim: This third school will be more advanced than the 1996 and 1997 schools, devoted mainly to research problems. It will be divided into two parts.
