Nonlinear time series analysis is becoming a more and more reliable tool for the study of complicated dynamics from measurements. The concept of deterministic low-dimensional chaos has proven to be fruitful in the understanding of many complex phenomena, but even where processes are obviously non-deterministic nonlinear methods allow for improved data analysis. Despite wide interest from many disciplines, many potential users of nonlinear time series analysis are not sufficiently familiar with nonlinear methods of data analysis as to guarantee a successful application of these methods. Currently, expertise is concentrated in very few groups worldwide and thus deserves to be shared.

This school will present the necessary background of dynamical systems theory and the relevant aspects of time series analysis. Emphasis is laid on understanding the concepts of nonlinear time series analysis, on learning about algorithmic implementations, and on obtaining experience by application to data. The scientific organisers present lectures covering the background of deterministic dynamical systems and the main topics of linear and nonlinear time series analysis. Guest speakers will discuss more specialised topics, recent developments, or the data analysis of particular systems. Participants will study their own time series or sample data sets in computer exercises accompanying the lectures. There will be opportunity for the participants to discuss their own work.

We expect 20-30 participants from all disciplines, experimentalists and theoreticians at or above PhD level, with sufficient mathematical background. Preference is given to young researchers who are already analysing time series data or plan to do so. Applications for participation should be sent to the address above. Application forms are available upon request or on the conference web page. The registration fee is DM 200. Costs for accommodation and lunch will be covered by the Max-Planck-Institute. Purpose: This meeting looks back to the 1968 AMS Summer Mathematics Institute on Global Analysis. The 1968 meeting was dominated by Smale's lectures on hyperbolic systems and was a major event in shaping the modern development of dynamical systems. The 1998 meeting will explore the impact of these lectures on the last 30 years in dynamical systems.
Program: This four-day conference will mainly consist of hour lectures, but some sessions for shorter contributed papers will be included. Many of the original participants will be plenary speakers. A social event is planned.

Seventh International Conference on Numerical Combustion, 30th March to 1st April 1998.

The Seventh International Conference on Numerical Combustion will focus on the integration of theory, modelling, and numerical implementation in the fundamental study and technological application of combustion phenomena.

Advances in computational algorithms and hardware, and in theoretical methods continue to have a revolutionary impact in challenging major difficulties in the study of combustion. Physically applicable, efficient, and accurate numerical solution of complex combustion phenomena, their associated theory and modelling, and their relationship to experiment, are the subjects of the conference.

This will enable the plenary speakers directly to encourage young scientists within their field.

Venue: The University of Bath is one of the UK's most successful small universities. It is situated in an attractive campus, neighbouring open countryside, yet is only one mile from Bath city centre. Bath is one of three World Heritage cities in Europe. Communications are good, Bath being only 1 h 10 min from London by train. Motorway links are also good. Accommodation is readily available both at The University and in Bath.

The European Geophysical Society XXIII General Assembly, 20-24 Ap ril 1998.

The European Geophysical Society will be holding its next General Assembly in Nice, in the south of France, during the week 20-24 April 1998. As part of the scientific programme for this meeting, there will be a number of sessions dedicated to nonlinear processes in all areas of geophysics. This is the premier annual meeting in Europe on all aspects of nonlinearity in the Earth and planetary sciences, and contributions from anyone in the UK working in these, or related, subject areas is very welcome to attend. EGS also publishes a series of journals in these subject areas, including one dedicated to nonlinear systems - Nonlinear Processes in Geophysics. Details may be found in the EGS Web pages (see below).
The EGS is particularly keen to welcome young scientists and graduate students, and has a generous support programme to help younger scientists participate in their meetings.

Announcement: The workshop is an interdisciplinary meeting of biologists and mathematicians focused on effects of individual behavioural decisions of animals on population dynamics. Such decisions include, for example: optimal prey selection (i.e., prey model), optimal path selection (i.e., path model), ideal free distribution, optimal antipredatory behaviour (including effect of refuges), various trade-offs in behaviour of parasitoids (superparasitism, host-feeding etc.) and other game theoretical models.

Although it is generally believed that such behavioural decisions have a strong impact on population dynamics, qualitative work on effects of these behavioural choices on population dynamics seems to have started quite recently. The workshop should bring together scientists working in behavioural ecology, and/or in population biology both from theoretical and experimental point of view (including mathematicians and theoretical population biologists). Moreover, the workshop is also intended to attract some bright young mathematically orientated participants for whom the meeting would provide a starting point for their PhD thesis in theoretical population biology.

Background: The IMA believes the time is right for a Special Year in Mathematical Biology at the IMA in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The program will be built upon a selected series of workshops highlighting some of the mathematical challenges emerging from the consideration of biological issues. The Fourth International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics will be held in Edinburgh from 5th to 9th of July 1999 (one week before the 1999 Dundee Numerical Analysis Conference). It will be jointly organised by the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, with the involvement of the Mathematics Departments at Edinburgh University and Heriot-Watt University. It will be the largest mathematics meeting to be held in the UK since 1958 with over 2500 applied mathematicians expected to attend. Previous Congresses met in Paris in 1987, Washington, DC in 1991, and Hamburg in 1995. Broad developments and the latest advances in industrial and applied mathematics will be presented. Cross disciplinary themes within mathematics, between mathematics and other disciplines, and between mathematics and particular industries will be covered. The main features of the programme will be: General lectures by leading international experts on current and recent developments of industrial, computational and applied mathematics. Mathematical methods for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of models will be presented and important practical applications will be discussed extensively. Mini-symposia and organised discussion sessions to provide integrated presentations and discussion by international panels on the latest mathematical and computational techniques. Research on industrial, commercial and environmental applications will be discussed as well as other issues including education and the public perception of mathematics. Special all day sessions will be run in conjunction with learned societies and other organisations discussing new research in the mathematical and computational sciences and outlining novel applications.
